Shower Water Filter - Hidden Dangers of Taking a Shower
If you're not using a shower water filter, recent research studies conducted at the University Of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health may shock you into getting one. The studies show that you would get less chemical exposure from drinking contaminated water than using it to take a shower or wash your clothes.
What? There's more contamination in my shower than in my drinking water? My clothes are contaminating me? That can't be right, can it?
With a total area of approximately 1.8 square meters in adults, skin wins as the largest organ in the human body. That's a lot of surface area; no doubt about that. But I always thought that skin acted as a passive barrier to chemicals and bacterial agents. Now it appears I thought wrong. Drinking contaminated water may not be the only or main way I can expose myself to toxic chemicals. In fact, we've underestimated the impact of skin absorption of contaminants in municipal water. It seems that skin saturation rates for solvents are remarkably high. Under certain conditions, skin isn't even as effective a barrier to penetration as we thought. Wow!
And just when you're thinking you could live with the consequences, the news get worse. It seems the major threat caused by these water pollutants is far more likely to be as air pollutants right in your shower stall. Hot showers (109 °F) are especially bad. Unless there is a shower water filter attached, hot water releases up to 50% of the dissolved chloroform and 80% of the dissolved trichloroethylene (TCE) directly into the air as you shower.
Shower conditions become especially volatile when chlorine is present in the municipal water supply. Chlorine, combined with hot shower water, mixes more easily with other organic substances to form highly volatile, toxic chemicals that are more readily absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream. Chloroform and TCE are two such combinations. In addition to contaminants getting through the skin to the body as a whole, contaminants can adversely affect the skin, hair colour and scalp. It can make your eyes itchy and runny or aggravate sensitive areas of the nose, throat and lungs making it difficult to breathe. All in all, not a great way to start the day!
Check out EPA's list of the most common volatile compounds identified in many municipal drinking-water supplies. The chemical contents of that list may surprise you.
Obviously the time has come to put an end to all those volatile chemical parties occurring in shower stalls all over the country. Meanwhile, you can help make things better by just remembering to lower water temperatures in your shower and washing machine to well below 109 °F. A simple shower water filter or ideally a whole house water filter system should take care of the rest.
This is a scenario that none of us wants to deal with but most of us will be forced to over the course of our lives. What do we do when our water doesn't descend from the tap clear-but is yellow or red or brown?
Fortunately, there is probably an easy explanation for some of these water discoloration problems. According to MassDEP (the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection), brown, red, orange and yellow water can usually be attributed to rust-be it rust in the water main or the pipes in the building in which you reside.
The various colors are usually attributed to states of chemical oxidation of the iron and by the concentrations of rust in the water, according to MassDEP. And, according to the government agency, "the discolored water is not a health threat." Which is a huge relief to homeowners and apartment dwellers who wonder how long they have been drinking tainted water.
To address the problem, according to MassDEP, it's important to determine whether the problem is in your building or with the city/town water supply. This can be done by following some easy steps, such as determining if the water clears after it has run for a few minutes or if the problem occurs at only one or two faucets in the house, among several other steps. By determining the source of the problem, the solution can be quick to follow.
So while yellow or brown water can look disgusting and can lead one to believe it's certainly a health risk, organizations like the MassDEP argue that rust-related problems like this are not a threat to citizens' health.
Tips on Selecting the Best Faucet Water Filter That Will Purify Your Tap Water
Are you searching for the best faucet water filter for your home? It's a smart idea as today's public water sources are severely polluted with prescription drugs, weed killer, pesticides, lead, parasites, and literally thousands of other toxic chemicals. But what do you look for in a faucet filter?
Well, there's a large variety of water faucet filter systems available. The prices and effectiveness of different filter technology vary greatly. Just buying the most expensive system will not give you the best results. In fact, some of the more costly purification systems are not the best faucet water filter you can buy but rather are the worst performing.
Water pitchers with filters are very popular because they are cheap to buy. But, the filters on these need to be replaced three to four times a month if you use the pitcher daily. So, in the long run, these will turn out to be more expensive than installing a permanent purification system on your water lines.
Pitchers with filters are very limited in their performance. They will remove some of the contaminants however; there are hundreds of chemicals that the filters will not remove effectively. Pitchers with filters are better than nothing but are not the best choice.
Filter systems that use distillation or reverse osmosis tend to be the most expensive to buy and the most difficult to maintain. These systems are not able to remove many kinds of chemicals that are commonly found in tap water.
Distillation and reverse osmosis systems also have a very bad side effect. When water passes through them, all of the healthy minerals are stripped out of the water. So, you're left with flat tasting water that still has toxic contaminants in it. People that buy these systems have made the mistake of thinking that the most expensive system must be the most effective.
In addition to pollution, your faucet filter system needs to be able to remove chlorine that's been added to public water. Not only will it make your water taste much better, it will be healthier. Although municipal facilities dump massive amounts of chlorine into public water to kill bacteria, it is a poison that is very hazardous to your health.
So, what do you look for in a purification system? The best faucet water filter system for your home will have an active carbon filter, a sub micron filter, and an ion exchange.
You can install these filters at different locations in your home. There are whole home filters that are installed on your main water lines. These will purify all the water in your home. There are also under the sink and shower head filters if you want to purify water on specific taps.
So, go ahead and checkout a multi stage carbon purifier today as they are the best faucet water filter system you'll find.

A ceramic water filter is a very effective tool for removing contaminants from water, and is used in both commercial and household uses. Many of the contaminants found in drinking water can be removed through the use of a ceramic water filter, and is often used after environmental disasters to ensure the water is safe enough to consume. There are many types of filters on the market, but if you are looking for how a filter works, this article should help get a basic understanding.
So to understand how a ceramic water filter works, we must first look at how it is made. A unit is essentially a clay pot. Now by saying it is a clay pot, I am oversimplifying the basic contents of the clay, but you can think of it like clay you would make a jar or pot. The difference is the clay has materials added to it. These materials may be composed of sawdust, coffee husks, and possibly rice hulls, as well as other possible ingredients. The clay and these materials are mixed and then put into a furnace. As the clay cures, and the temperatures rises, the other ingredients burn away. When the other ingredients burn away they leave little pores in the clay. Now these pores are so small, only a water molecule can pass through. Since only a molecule can pass through, contaminants in the water get trapped and the water is now purified.
Today, a coating is also added onto a ceramic filter. This coating is usually made up of colloidal silver. The colloidal silver has a special bacterial killing property, which has the ability to kill microbes in the water. After the water filter is coated, it is then placed in a plastic shell and water is pressured through the unit. There are many add-ons people use to add another layer of filtration to their home unit, but in simplest form, the workings of a ceramic water filter works as described above.
Reverse Osmosis Water Filters - The Danger of Using Reverse Osmosis Filters For Pure Drinking Water
The reverse osmosis water filter was an amazing invention. The majority of the water on this planet is salt-water, undrinkable. The correct reverse osmosis filter can remove the salt and make it drinkable.
That being said, reverse osmosis filters have been touted as the best purification system for home use and that is simply not true. If your source is dirty, salty or full of debris, then that may be the case, but, on its own, a reverse osmosis water filter does not make it safe to drink. Additional steps are needed to accomplish that task. Let's look at how the reverse osmosis filter works.
A liquid under high pressure is forced through a porous membrane. Anything heavier or molecularly larger than the liquid is removed. Anything smaller or lighter passes through with the liquid.
Reverse osmosis filters are used in kidney dialysis machines to clean the blood. They are good at de-mineralizing for industrial applications that require it to prevent equipment corrosion and wear. And, as mentioned they can remove salt, which is heavier and molecularly denser or larger. Those things are great, but not enough to purify.
In order to purify, a reverse osmosis water filter must be followed by disinfection, carbon filtration and re-mineralization. You probably recognize that drinking bacteria filled water is unhealthy. It typically causes gastrointestinal illnesses, similar to the stomach flu. In most cases chlorine or some other chemical is used to kill bacteria.
Carbon filtration is necessary to remove the chlorine and other chemical contaminants. More than 2400 have been found in ground-water. All of them cause cancer. So, activated carbon granules are a step that cannot be skipped.
Re-mineralization is only necessary when a reverse osmosis filter or distillation is used. Drinking de-mineralized causes digestive disorders and is bad for your health. So, the "re" mineralization step is necessary to make the fluids healthy.
A reverse osmosis water filter for the home costs at least ,000. It takes a long time to clean even a gallon of water. For every gallon that it cleans, as many as five become waste-water. Some people use the wastewater for plants or irrigation purposes, but most people realize that it isn't even good for the garden.
A reverse osmosis filter is easily torn and requires a lot of maintenance. They are prone to manufacturing defects, so they may not even do the job that they are supposed to do.
Reverse osmosis filters require electricity to work properly. It is needed to pressurize and pump. Thus, it increases electricity bills and adds to the natural resources used.
All in all, you may see that while a reverse osmosis water filter is great for some purposes, it is not the best choice for most of us. Treatment facilities make sure that what comes out of our tap is clear and bacteria free. We have to worry about chemicals, drugs, hormones, weed killers, bug sprays and other chemicals that a reverse osmosis filter will not remove. Those are the facts. The choice is yours.
GE Reverse Osmosis Water Systems - What You Must Know Before You Buy
What if I told you straight off the bat that GE reverse osmosis water systems could potentially leave you with unhealthy water? Surely not I hear you say! Unfortunately that is one of the many downsides of this product.
The GE reverse osmosis water system is based on old technology which works by forcing water under pressure through a very fine membrane. This removes those vital minerals and still doesn't get rid of all the contaminants like the equivalent multi-stage water filter systems do.
Now it's fair to say that any system is better than none and GE reverse osmosis filters do filter out some harmful substances, but they also can't get rid of all of them, even chlorine, and vitally important is the fact they remove essential minerals like calcium and magnesium.
We need these minerals for our health and well-being. A study by the World Health Organization concluded that drinking water should contain these essential minerals otherwise it can have long term health repercussions.
Another problem is the amount of water the GE reverse osmosis filters discard. For every gallon of water they produce, around 2 - 3 gallons are lost. That's a huge amount of wastage, especially in todays more enlightened and water conscious world.
From my research I have found an overwhelming number of complaints about the noise the GE reverse osmosis water system makes. It is driving some people round the bend and one guy took it out and left it on his porch! This is quite an important consideration as they are generally mounted these days under your kitchen sink. No more quite dinners!
With today's technology there are far superior, cost effective alternatives to the GE reverse osmosis water products out there. Look for a water filter system that has a multi-stage activated carbon filter for starters. The first stage removes around 99% of all contaminants (but not the minerals), while the second stage restores the ph balance ensuring the water is not acidic.
The maintenance of these is simple, and changing filters is a breeze, even on a whole house system, where you only change the filters every six months. I realize it can be confusing with so many systems out there, but remember this is your family's health were talking about here. So while you are right in seeking out a suitable filtration system, as today's tap water is proven to be contaminated, it is essential you stay away from systems like the GE reverse osmosis filters.
So some food for thought there and I hope I have helped answer some of the questions you may have had, especially on the GE reverse osmosis water product, and that now you can make a more informed choice.
If you would like to learn more about the systems I recommend to use and which to avoid, visit my website today.
Storm Water Filter - The Easy Way to Protect the Environment From Pollutants in Storm Water Runoff
Storm water runoff poses a great threat to the groundwater supply and the environment. That's because it is easily contaminated by chemicals that are swept away along with it. Read on for how to use a storm water filter to solve that problem.
And yes, the storm water filter really is an easy solution. The threat posed by the storm runoff lies in the fact that it sweeps up all sorts of contaminants that have dripped onto the ground over time, and flushes them into the ground water.
How to prevent that? Well, the water goes into storm drains, and so they way to stop any contaminants from polluting the water, you'll simply plug in a storm drain filter insert into the drain. This will keep sediment out of the ground water, along with any other pollutants that might otherwise enter the water system.
The pollution caused by storm runoff has become an ever more pressing concern at the local as well as the national level, and with good reason. Fortunately, the use of storm water filters will help prevent pollution problems by removing any waste materials from the rain water before it enters the water system.
Among the various options is a storm drain filter insert called the Drain Guard. It's a simple device that has been specifically designed to fit most typical catch basins, where it is held securely in place by the metal grate. This way, it can remove all sorts of pollutants, from oil, grease, debris, litter, as well as coarse sediments from the water that flows through it.
Among the major sources of storm water pollution are parking lots. That's because cars - and any trucks that might be there - often leak oil, coolant, grease, and other chemicals onto the ground, which could then be swept away into catch basins when it rains. Unfortunately, those catch basins are designed to drain into rivers, lakes, streams, and the ground water, where the pollutants can cause great problems.
So if you're in charge of a parking lot, or any areas where cars and trucks are stored or serviced, you should check into storm water filters to protect the groundwater. The same is true for industrial plants and even for construction sites.

V19 9/2/09 Visiting My Koi Mentor's Pond On YouTube.
Very privileged today to have had the opportunity to visit a very special pond. Not one that is huge, nor one that focuses too much on visual aesthetics, but one with SUPERB polished living water for koi. Total tonnage is 47 tonnes, of which one third is in the up-down chamber filter which is complemented by a complex external filtration system reminiscent of a petrochemical plant. TDO levels are raised above saturation levels by cavitation technology and temperature is maintained at about 25C by a chiller. The pond is only 3 feet deep and is run on a straight flow system with water returns at one end of the pond and skimmers and all bottom drains at the opposite end. 25 jumbos (including ginrins and doitsus) are currently housed in this pond, the flagship pond out of 4 koi ponds located at these premises. Almost all of them are in the 80-95cm range. The owner is highly respected in the koi circuit, even in Japan, and also has an impressive arowana collection as well as sting rays and other fresh water creatures, all of which are treated with music therapy!! :-)
